Gunner
On Wednesday January 30, 2008 our Boxer started limping pretty badly. His whole back leg became paralyzed. We rushed him to vet and by the time we got to the vets office both his back legs were completely paralyzed. After looking at him the Vet told us that our dog, Gunner, had a slippd disc and the disc was cutting off the nerves in his spine. So, he was going to have to have major back surgery on his spine to fix this – with no guarantees it would work. Cost of this operation was $5000 – $6000 and there were no payment plans. After hearing this news I completely busted out crying my eyes out. There was no way we could afford that. I lost my job 6 months ago and were barely getting by as it is. After about an hour of discussion with my fiance Shane, the only thing we could do was put him to sleep. Something we never dreamed of doing to our dog. He just turned 2 years old – he was part of our family. It just tore us apart. One of the hardest thing Ive ever had to do so far!! So, tonight I was thinking about a photo contest that I am entering and the picture I submitted came to me… The collage I submitted is exactly what love represents to me. Gunner was our best friend. Although irritating and pesky at times, he was a great companion and he always made my son laugh. They played just like brothers. Whether Gunner was jumping in the tub with Brody during his baths, laying next to him when he was sick, cuddling in bed with him at night, or running through the sprinklers in the backyard with him - he was always right by his side. There was always this calmness when Gunner was in the house – I guess I always felt safe with him. He would always watch to make sure no one crazy was in front of our house and if strangers walked past, he barked so loud it would scare anyone – but yet he was the friendliest dog around. He loved to play and jump and run.
So, what represents love to me? The bond that our Dog Gunner and our Son Brody had with each other is what represents love to me. Its something no one could ever take away from us. Even though Gunner is no longer with us, he is still watching over us. There are so many good memories with Gunner – and Im so glad that I have pictures to tell the story of how great our dog was to us.
